How Do I Get My Baby to Fall Asleep on a Plane?

How Do I Get My Baby to Fall Asleep on a Plane?

By MELISSA BRAMWELL (Senior Sleep Consultant)

Today, I want to address a topic that may seem daunting for many families: traveling with your little ones. I understand that some of you may feel hesitant to embark on such adventures, but fear not! I'm here to provide you with valuable tips and encouragement, so when the time comes for your next travel day, you'll feel confident and well-prepared.

Best Time to Schedule a Flight

Let's dive into the realm of air travel specifically, as I share some insights on when to book your flight.

It all depends on your family dynamics and your children's personalities. Whether you prefer red-eye flights, early morning departures, or afternoon journeys, the key is to choose a schedule that instills confidence and comfort in your decision.

FOR THE EASY NAPPER

If your baby is an on-the-go sleeper, this factor can greatly influence your travel plans and flight timing.

  • Having a baby who can take naps while on the move is incredibly helpful, as you can select a flight close to their usual nap time.

  • By following a short nap routine, including a lullaby or story, you can board the plane knowing that your little one will doze off during the journey.

  • They'll enjoy a substantial nap, and before you know it, you'll have reached your destination effortlessly.

FOR THE NOT-SO-EASY NAPPER

However, not all families have the luxury of an on-the-go napper, and that's perfectly alright.

  • If your baby doesn't sleep well on the move, I recommend scheduling the first one or two naps at home before setting off on your trip.

  • It's especially important to prioritize the first nap, allowing your baby to rest in their familiar crib for a longer duration. This ensures they receive ample rest before embarking on the hustle and bustle of travel.

  • Keep in mind that depending on the length of the flight and your destination, your baby might be due for another nap while on the airplane. Unfortunately, we can't force babies to nap on command.

Sleep Aids

Nonetheless, you can employ sleep aids to help your little one fall asleep if necessary. Whether it's swaddling, using a pacifier, or any other comforting measure, don't hesitate to provide assistance.

I understand it might seem daunting, especially if you've previously sleep trained your baby without props. But remember, this is a temporary situation; you're traveling, and it's a special day. It's worth making the travel experience easier for your baby too.

So go ahead and bring those sleep aids to help your baby fall asleep while enjoying those precious snuggles and cuddles, which might be rare if your baby is used to independent sleeping and napping in their crib.

Key Tips to Getting Your Baby to Sleep

Below are some additional tips on encouraging your baby to fall asleep during the flight.

  • COMFY OUTFIT

  • Make sure your little one is dressed in a comfy outfit suitable for flying.

  • BOOK & SONGS

  • Bringing along a familiar book or singing familiar songs can also create a soothing environment.

  • “KEY SLEEP WORD”

  • It’s very helpful to have a "key sleep word." This can be as simple as "night night time," "sleepy time," "good night," or "kiss kiss."

  • By consistently using this word before nap time and bedtime, your baby will start associating it with falling asleep.

  • If you have a trip planned a few months from now and haven't established a key sleep word yet, it's a great idea to start considering one that could be beneficial for you.

  • Once on the plane, a gentle "night nights" accompanied by back rubs might work wonders in lulling your little one to sleep or at least making them drowsy. Even a slightly drowsy state can alleviate some of the pressure for them to fall asleep.

We Are Here to Help!

Remember, if your baby is an on-the-go sleeper, fantastic! Book your flights as close to nap time as possible. And if they're not, that's perfectly fine too. Arrange for one of the naps to take place at home, providing your baby with a solid start to their day before embarking on your travel plans.

There's only so much you can control, so remember to give yourself some grace during this journey. Acknowledge that it may be a challenging day and be realistic with your expectations.
