How to Handle When Your Parents Don't Agree With You Sleep Training Your Child
By Natalie Myre hart (Sleep SQUAD Consultant)
Today, I want to share some insights and tips for a situation that many parents face: what to do when your parents or in-laws don't approve of your choice to sleep train your baby. It’s more common than you think!
Understanding Different Approaches to Sleep
It's essential to understand that different generations and cultures often have diverse approaches to handling sleep. Some communities practice co-sleeping until their children reach an age we might find surprising, while others firmly believe in avoiding any form of crying. These differences can lead to tension and disagreements when it comes to sleep training.
However, the approach we use at Kelly Murray Sleep has been incredibly effective for countless families.
It's a hands-on method, and yes, it involves some crying, but this crying is brief and results in a transformative experience for both parents and babies.
I personally went through this journey when I hired Kelly to help me sleep train my eight-month-old, who is now almost five.
What To Do
To address the disapproval of your parents or in-laws, the first step is to educate them about the safety of sleep training. We often have concerns about the crying and other aspects of this process, but as sleep consultants, we provide guidance and education on every step of the way.
We can offer you articles and resources to share with your parents or in-laws, helping them understand the process and the hands-on approach we'll guide you through.
If they live with you, it's crucial to be a strong leader within your family. Clearly express that you've made this choice based on your belief in the process and your trust in our consultants.
Support During the Transition
During those first few challenging nights of sleep training, your parents or in-laws may struggle to accept the method. In some cases, families have even considered offering to get a hotel room for them to provide support during this period.
The key is to be firm about the decision you've made to improve your family's sleep and explain why sleep is crucial for your family's well-being.
Focus On The Wins
Another helpful tip is to focus on the wins. While sleep training can be difficult initially, the progress is rapid. Within the first week, you'll likely witness significant improvements.
Share these milestones with your parents or in-laws, updating them on the positive changes you're experiencing.
Trusting Your Parenting Decisions
Lastly, trust in your parenting decisions and your baby's abilities. Convey to your family that sleep training is a precious gift you're giving to your child. It's not uncommon for even the most skeptical grandparents to come around and realize that this was the right choice for your family's well-being.
So, remember to educate them, share your successes, and be patient. Before you know it, they'll be onboard with your chosen method and delighted that your baby and your family are well-rested. Hang in there, believe in your decisions, and remember that the ultimate goal is a happier, healthier family with the gift of restful sleep.
