Is it Ever Too Late to Sleep Train?

Is it Ever Too Late to Sleep Train?

By Mckenna Linford (SENIOR Sleep Consultant)

As a pediatric sleep consultant, one question I often encounter is, "Is it too late to sleep train?" It's a question that carries a touch of concern and worry, especially when it comes from a mom with an older baby, toddler, or even a preschooler. The fear that they might have missed the window for sleep training is a common one. So, let's debunk this myth and explore the possibilities.

The Short Answer: No, It's Never Too Late

The short answer to the question is a resounding no. It is never too late for a child to learn valuable independent sleep skills. In fact, we typically work with children up to age 8 or 9.

Our approach and sleep training methods may vary depending on a child’s age, but our ultimate goal of achieving independent, consolidated sleep remains consistent.

We firmly believe that we can help children of any age improve their sleep quality, leading to happier, well-rested families.

Sleep Training Across Ages

Let's take a closer look at how sleep training can be adapted to different age groups :

Infants (0-6 Months)

Sleep training can begin as early as the newborn stage. This phase involves what we call "sleep shaping."

During this period, we're laying the foundation for great sleep skills one step at a time. We work on establishing a structured feeding and nap schedule, with a focus on preventing over-tiredness by using wake windows effectively. Additionally, we ensure that the room environment is conducive to quality sleep.

Our goal is to help newborn families cherish this stage while taking small, gradual steps toward independent sleep. And yes, our newborn plan allows for those precious naps in your arms!

Babies (6-12 Months)

With babies, our primary objective is teaching independent sleep skills.

We employ various approaches to help you gradually eliminate sleep props like rocking, holding, co-sleeping, or pacifiers. These approaches may involve you being in the room with your baby during the initial week or coming in and out of the room. Both methods allow you to provide comfort and support as your baby learns their new sleep skills.

Throughout this stage, we'll ensure your baby maintains an age-appropriate schedule and receives adequate feedings.

Toddlers (1-3 Years)

Toddlers require a comprehensive approach that includes perfecting the room environment, establishing appropriate nap and bedtime schedules, and implementing a consistent bedtime routine.

Most toddlers are working on learning to fall asleep without direct assistance from mom or dad, so we often use the "in the room" approach.

Additionally, we incorporate rewards and consequences into the process and teach parents how to kindly yet firmly enforce boundaries.

Preschoolers and Beyond

Surprisingly, even older children can benefit from sleep training if they're experiencing sleep problems.

The key at this age is to address any underlying issues that may be causing sleep disturbances. To do this, we, as consultants, often schedule video calls and discussions with both children and parents to understand their specific needs.

We work on building confidence, incorporating relaxation techniques into their bedtime routine, using social stories, and giving children more control in the process.

We Are Here to Help!

As you can see, it's never too late to consider sleep training for your child, regardless of their age. Sleep training can help establish healthy sleep habits, improve sleep quality, and bring much-needed rest to both children and parents.
